LongTail Video - September 2010 Newsletter

We are quickly wrapping up development on JW Player 5.3 and looking for feedback. This release should be of particular interest to HTML5 users and JavaScript developers. If you have a minute, then we encourage you to try it out and let us know what you think.

In this newsletter:

JW Player 5.3 Beta — HTML5 & JavaScript Support
The next release of JW5 is going to be a big one. JW Player 5.3 introduces a unified model for working with Flash and HTML5. How? We've taken our Flash & HTML5 players and rolled them together, giving them a single JavaScript API and skinning model. JW Player 5.3 will deliver on the promise of "embed once, run anywhere."

The documentation and release packages are coming together, but before we finalize it, we would love to get your feedback. Check out this post on our blog. It includes the beta distribution and an example snippet to help you get started. If you have a suggestion or idea, now is the time to tell us — just comment on the blog post.

Sharing — An Example of a Skinnable Plugin
One of our recent releases was an update to the Sharing plugin. Sharing has been popular with a number of our users for its simple, clean interface. One of the most interesting aspec ts is that Sharing now supports skins, meaning you can style the dock icons and display overlays with your own custom skin. See an example.

You can read more about the release on our blog. If you need assistance skinning the plugin read our skinning guide and to see an example skin take a look at Glow.

Over time we will be updating other plugins to support skins. We will also be encouraging developers of JavaScript plugins (coming soon...) to make them skinnable.

From Our Blog: Transcoding Best Practices
Let's face it. Transcoding can be complicated. So many formats, settings, options, display types, etc. Whether you are transcoding a video for your website or building a transcoding service for your users, it can be overwhelming. Our advice: keep it simple.

To learn more, read our post: Transcoding Best Practices.

Replay: Dive into HTML5 Video
In case you missed it this summer, Jeroen Wijering was joined by Opera's Philip Jagenstedt to discuss HTML5 Video in a webinar on ReelSEO.com. If you are starting with HTML5 or considering it for your site, then this is an excellent resource. Watch the replay now.

Thanks again for your continued support.

Sincerely,
The JW Player Team
